IOWA CITY, IA - The League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa will host National LULAC President Roger Rocha Jr. at its quarterly state meeting on Saturday.

The state council also will swear in new officers. Current State Director Joe Enriquez Henry was elected as a National Vice President of the Midwest region in July. Per national rules, he must step down as state director. He has appointed Mike Reyes of Davenport, the former deputy state director, as state director. Maria Bribriesco of Bettendorf has been named the deputy state director. Christian Ucles will be appointed as the political director and be in charge of mobilizing efforts for the Iowa Caucuses.

Both Reyes and Bribriesco will be sworn in at the state meeting, which is from 10 a.m. to noon at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. in Iowa City.

“We are excited to host our new LULAC national president and share with him the work we have done in our state and what we plan moving forward with the Iowa Caucuses,” said Joe Enriquez Henry, the current state director of LULAC-Iowa.

LULAC-Iowa plans a statewide Caucus campaign that will include town hall meetings and informational sessions throughout the state to train Latinos throughout the state about the Iowa Caucuses and how to participate in them.

State officers also will discuss LULAC work on the national level, civic engagement in Iowa, and how to increase the Latino vote in the state.

Founded in 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens is the oldest U.S. Latino civil rights organization. There are more than 1,000 local LULAC councils, which hold voter registration drives, provide awareness to residents about language and immigration issues, sponsor programs and advocate for Latinos.
