LULAC announces leadership banquet award winners

DES MOINES - A longtime Latino family business owner and a young activist who has worked to make Iowa's communities a more welcoming place for all individuals are among those who will be recognized at the annual Latino Leadership Awards Banquet.

The League of United Latin American Citizen, Council 307's annual banquet is Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Holiday Inn-Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa. This year's event is dedicated to building and protecting the Latino community.

Council 307 will present the following awards and scholarships:

·         Emerging Latino Leader Award – Madeline Cano

·         LULAC Builder Award – Jazmin Newton-Butt

·         Latino Business Person of the Year Award – Sal Alaniz Jr. and posthumously, his father, Sal Alaniz Sr.

·         Latino Hero Award – Dawn Martinez Oropeza and Zuleyma "Zuli" Garcia.

·         Iowa Latino Leadership Award – Sonia Reyers Snyder

·         Lifetime Achievement Award – Mary E. Campos and Andrea Rivera.

·         Carlos Celaya, a graduate of East High School who is attending Des Moines Area Community College, and Isabel Paredes, a senior at Marshalltown High School, will each receive a $500 scholarship.

Abigail Zapote, LULAC's National Vice President for Young Adults will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. Vince Valdez, the first Latino spokesman and a retired sergeant with the Des Moines Police Department, will emcee the event.

The banquet reception is at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner, awards ceremony and evening entertainment. Tickets are still available for the event. Individual tickets are $50.
